 As a form of lacquer painting technique for repairing pottery originated in prehistorical times of ancient China, and later became very popular in the Tang Dynasty. Consequently, the technique was adopted and advanced by Japanese craftsmen. Today it has become an art of recreation on broken potteries or ceramic pieces. Zoe Zhou has worked on the Golden Mend Restoration for over 14 years and explains here the technique involved in repairing broken pottery.

The process involves a number steps: first step is fusing the broken pieces with resin and the powder of sticky rice or egg whites; then using the mixture of resin and the powder of fired clay to fill the void to restore the piece to its original shape. Second step is to polish the piece.

The two steps need to be repeated numerous times to achieve the desired result and then leave it as it is for approximately three months, depending on the humidity and air temperature.

After the final step of applying the pure gold or silver powder to the object is performed, the whole process of recreation finishes. Occasionally gemstones are mounted as well.
